I'd be up for a ride.

I'm thinking of doing something natural and hilly, maybe in The Trossachs, on Monday - weather forecast looks dry for that area on Monday.

As tempted as I am Ben Venue was the last 'proper' ride Ive done (I need to get out more!!) so would prefer something else. It just wouldnt be the same with nice weather anyway.
I actually quite fancy Glen Ample/Cakes at Balqhidder (if the cake shop is still open)/Back along the Sustrans Route. What about meeting at 10 at the Stank Glen/Falls of Lenny car park?

Dwayne,
I was considering that very loop, but instead of going back via Balquhidder taking a right, heading along South Loch Earn Road and eventually to Comrie, then back via Dalginross through Glen Artney to Callander or thereabouts . I've not mapped it for distance yet, but I reckon it'd be quite an epic.
The Glen Ample part would be a good start though, if the weather is good I'm up for Monday.

I am up for Dwaynes one, reasonable length and Balquidder tea room is yummy
The trail from Glen Finglass down to Glen Buckie is a bit "indistinct"
and can be interesting.

Bearing in mind the price of petrol these days, I'd be up for Alasdair's suggestion. If I'm gonna spend money on petrol to cover the reasonable distance to get there then I'd like to make it worthwhile; besides coming back on flat Sustrans route doesn't particularly get my juices flowing..!
Saying that, I haven't looked at a map yet... _________________ "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum." |

Was that how you came up with the classic Moorfoot Hills frozen
sphagnum route?

I like the sound of that. Ive been wondering about a similar loop but going through Glen Vorlich instead of Glen Ample.
Reckon its just the shorter Glen Ample loop for me on Monday though as I doubt Im fit enough for a big loop just now.
HH, try taking the switchbacks on the Sustrans route at speed, that'll get your juices flowing!!

Not guilty! Wasn't me that came up with that deviation, ahem, part of the route... some of us had more accurate mapping. _________________ "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum." |

I know that Glen Artney can be ridden, but I don't yet know how to make the bit from Lochearnhead to Comrie into something approaching interesting. I too haven't looked at a map, it's on my to-do list today so I'll post something back up later.
As for stops, unfortunately the chocolatier in Comrie has shut down, but there's a nice deli and some tea rooms. And an amazing butcher, but I don't fancy the idea of carrying a pound of sausages home in my Camelbak.
In any case, Glen Ample seems like a good idea to begin with, the forecast is for drizzle, but warm drizzle at that. |

I believe that Balquhidder Old Library tea room is now closed.
I've been through Glen Artney several times on a touring bike - it's a
lovely route.
That said, another option for a big day out is to head to Balquhidder
via Glen Finglas and then Glen Dubh, returning via Glen Ample.

Bugger. Lovely tea room it was too.
Yep, done that a couple of times, great loop it is too. The vague/non existant singletrack down to Glen Buckie is fun, often at the limit of rideability depending on weather/mud depth.
Reckon we will meet up at ten and see how we feel/the weather is on the day.

The full loop via Comrie is 60k according to Memory Map (1300m ascent), but of that perhaps 10 to 15 is on the road or disused railways, unless there's anything more interesting to be found on the Landranger.
I'm with Dwayne though, Falls of Lenny carpark at 10 and a decision there makes sense.

Could someone post the OS grid ref for the 10am rendezvous, just to be sure? _________________ "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum." |

Ta!
A shorter, gentler ride tomorrow actually suits me fine as I went down to Kielder and Newcastleton today - and had wee tumble! Tore my Endure eVent jacket, so I'll send it back to them and see what they can do with it. _________________ "I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum." |

I am a little confused with the options for tomorrow, what is the current
favourite. A "gentler" ride will suit Tony too.

I was thinking that we ride up Glen Ample then decide if anyone wants to follow Alasdairs route and we split up or we just head back down the Sustrans route.
