Mascarpone!

(Mask-a-pony!)

Thought I'd try and inject something into this forum, even if not biking... Surprised

No doubt I'll be out for my usual snail-paced Pentlands ride on Saturday morning, if you're interested.

Good to hear you're getting back in the saddle, Tom! Would certainly be up for some gentler rides - where's this ride on Saturday start from?

I was thinking Balerno-Harlaw-Maidens-Glencorse-Green Cleugh-Thriepmuir-Nail Trail-Balerno.

Is the Nail Trail a new name for the Balerno singletrack? Presumably it's gotten that name because somebody's been making anti-MTB booby traps for it. If that's the case then that's sad news to hear.

I probably won't be suitable for even slow/gentle rides until the New Year - I had a (self-inflicted) accident while commuting a few weeks back and broke a bone in each hand. They're on the mend now but I doubt my hands will be strong enough for offroad riding for a few more weeks. Sad

It's the name that gets used by the ERC/STW folks for it (the ERC folks love to name stuff) so I tend to use it now as well. I've no idea why it's called that but I've never seen any booby traps on it and I probably ride it more often than anyone else. If anything it's actually been improved a bit over the years, so much so that when the ground is dry (and with a bit of luck/skill) it's just about 100% rideable.

The first time we used it on a group ride you could see the potential but I recall Alan commmenting that it didn't flow, and he was right. It's much, much better now - so much now that on a good day I think it's by far the best riding in the Pentlands.

At the moment it'll be boggy so we'll probably be riding the western loop rather than the direct line, however I'll night-ride it sometime this week (possibly tonight) and see what sort of condition it's in.

It really is a super wee trail that and I agree it has been much improved
lately. Glad to hear you are on the mend Chris, it looked a nasty spill.

Had not planned to ride up but could do, it adds 14 miles to my ride though
7 are downhill and the 7 uphill are mild! I only suggested Harlaw because
Andy would know it. No problem to meet at your place.

I think you riding out would be a good idea as that way you might be tired before we start, making it easier for me to keep up...

If we start from Balerno I'll provide post-ride coffee's (and mayne even cake) at my place.

on the MTB Scotland festive drinking the night before then ;o)

Tom, if you're riding up, shall I chum you up the trail? I guess I'd
need to be at yours about 9ish?

ps, I think that the first time that other Dave showed me the Balerno
singletrack I think he warned me that planks with nails in them had been
found hidden in one of its muddier parts. That's why I thought that may be
why it got the Nail Trail name. He only showed me one track though, so I
know nothing about an alternative western loop...

When you enter the trails near Thriepmuir there is a direct line down the hill which eventually comes out at the road on the western edge of Balerno. Instead of following that though you can turn west straight away with the trail running beside the road before heading downhill and looping back to meet the other trail beside the little bridge.

You do have to lift the bike over a couple of fences, plus for those short of skill (e.g. me) there are some rooty bits which might require a foot down. This pic is on the trail:

http://www.pbase.com/niblue/image/116681036

It has the advantage of missing out some of the boggiest patches so is a good option at this time of year.

There are probably more trails to be found in the treelines - a few years back we did one of Tom's magical mystery tours in there which had us visit a few places where a mountain bike probably hadn't been before (or since!). There are quite a few little side trails which I've used from time to time, but most suffer from problems linking them together into a route.

I would have joined you for this but unfortuantely busy on Saturday morning. I am doing an Inners ride on Sunday if anyone fancies it - XC route possibly with some DH stuff thrown in - 8:30am start.

niblue - do you want to PM me your address for the meet up? I live in Balerno too so shouldn't need too detailed instructions.
